In parallel with the biomarker assays, genetic assays will also be conducted in the EPIC-Heart case-cohort study. The specific objectives will be:
- to identify biologically plausible genes that may interact with lifestyle behaviours on the incidence of coronary heart disease and to identify lists of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the selected genes;
- to arrange for DNA extraction for potential coronary heart disease cases to be undertaken according to pre-specified criteria;
- to oversee the processes of DNA extraction, quantification and arraying and to ensure quality control;
- to identify the optimal partner laboratory to undertake the required assays on the necessary scale; and
- to undertake the genotyping of single nucleotide polymorphisms and to deliver complete and accurate data to the central datahub.
